What are "fake weddings": the fake weddings in India that are already trending

This festive trend is all the rage and recreates what many weddings do: performances, flowers, ceremonies and dancing, but without the bride and groom.

Parties in Indian cities have introduced a fun new trend : fake weddings . You can dress up in colorful ethnic attire, dance to the infectious rhythm of the traditional dhol, and enjoy delicious Indian food—although without the presence of a real couple .

These large-scale wedding-themed events include everything a real Indian wedding offers, except the bride and groom, and are perfect for those who want to experience a celebration similar to a grand wedding .

Fake weddings recreate an atmosphere similar to that of a couple's union, although without the bride and groom.

There are baraat-style entrances —a joyful bridal procession—choreographed performances , flower arrangements , and mock ceremonies . Guests dress in full ethnic attire, pose for Instagram, and dance the night away, just like any other Indian wedding.

These events are often paid for and some are held on college campuses and rooftop bars. Fake weddings seek to eliminate the financial and emotional burden while preserving the cultural energy. They resonate most with Generation Z , known as the first to grow up immersed in the digital age , with early and natural access to the internet and social media.

According to the BBC, fake weddings have caused a sensation in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore in recent weeks . Those attending are typically young people looking to enjoy a night out with friends, immersing themselves in the drama and fun of a traditional Indian wedding without the pressures that come with it.

"Last week, we attended one such event in Delhi: a mock sangeet (an evening of music and dancing typically held a few days before a wedding). At the event, held at an upmarket club , the atmosphere was electric : women danced in sequined saris and lehengas (long skirts and blouses), while men sported tailored kurtas and ethnic jackets. A traditional dhol drummer led the crowd onto the dance floor, and tequila -laced gol gappas (a popular Indian street snack) made their rounds," the BBC article reads.
