Hipólito Mejía supports his daughter Carolina for the presidency

Former President Hipólito Mejía addressed the potential presidential candidacy of his daughter, the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía , this Friday, stating that she will be the first woman to serve as president of the Dominican Republic.

"Carolina is going to beat the hell out of anyone who gets in her way," she warned forcefully, referring to a potential internal dispute within the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) ahead of the 2028 elections.

He emphasized that his daughter meets the necessary qualifications due to her honesty, leadership, charisma, and managerial ability.

The former president spoke out when approached by reporters after participating in a mass celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the Dominican Republic Tobacco Institute (Intabaco), held in Santiago province.

On another note, the former president addressed the Haitian issue, describing it as an unavoidable reality for the country.

He acknowledged that a significant portion of the Dominican Republic's industrial and construction sectors depend on Haitian labor.

Mejía praised the participation of former presidents Leonel Fernández and Danilo Medina in the meetings convened by President Luis Abinader to address the Haitian crisis.

Finally, referring to the economic outlook, the former head of state stated that Dominican basic food basket prices are among the lowest in the region.

Mejía was critical of the Dominican judicial system when questioned about the tragedy that occurred on April 8 at the Jet Set nightclub.

He stated that he doesn't know the details of the case, but he trusts that justice will act, although he described it as "quite bad and irresponsible."
