Makes it law to name East Boulevard after Frank Rainieri

Makes it law to name East Boulevard after Frank Rainieri

After completing all legislative procedures, the Senate approved the second reading and signed into law the bill naming the Eastern Tourist Boulevard, located in La Altagracia, after Frank Rainieri .

The proposal approved by the senators this Thursday was authored by Francisco Villegas, a representative from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), who highlighted the businessman's tourism, economic, and social contributions to La Altagracia, which, in his opinion, makes him worthy of having the boulevard named after him.

Article 6 of the bill stipulates that the Ministry of Tourism will be responsible for promoting the Frank Rainieri Tourist Boulevard nationally and internationally, and that the Ministry of Public Works will allocate all necessary funds to implement the name change approved by the senators.

According to the final report read in the Senate, the name change was motivated by the fact that Frank Rainieri was one of the driving forces behind the Eastern Boulevard , an infrastructure that has allowed tourists to quickly reach their destinations.

Punta Cana

The approved project also mentions part of Punta Cana's history, highlighting that the tourism project in that area began in 1969, when Rainieri and lawyer Theodore Kheel acquired a 58-square-kilometer plot of land and began construction of a hotel called the Punta Cana Club, which opened in 1971.

“With this first hotel, they launched what is now Grupo Punta Cana, and in 1979, they built the Punta Cana Hotel and in 1984, the Punta Cana International Airport,” the legislative document states.

In this sense, the project highlights that what is now known as Punta Cana was a completely isolated region with restricted access that could only be entered by helicopter, but with Rainieri's plans, the town re-emerged as a tourist area .

The bill was approved by the 24 senators present at the session and must now be sent to the Executive Branch for enactment.
