Omar Fernández rejects presidential candidacy proposal

National District Senator Omar Fernández rejected the Camino Nuevo party's proposal to offer him that organization's presidential candidacy for the 2028 elections.
In a statement, Fernández thanked Eglenin Morrison, president of Camino Nuevo, for his request. He also distanced himself from any presidential intentions and made it clear that his efforts "are focused on other priorities."
The Camino Nuevo party's proposal sparked comments in political circles, where the gesture was interpreted as a maneuver to project Fernández into the presidential debate outside of his current organization, Fuerza del Pueblo.
However, the legislator closed the door to any speculation about a presidential aspiration , stating: "Our responsibility is to generate concrete solutions to the problems Dominicans face every day."
In the statement, published through his X account, Omar reiterated that his commitment , one year after being elected as senator , continues to be the development of legislative initiatives focused on improving the lives of the most vulnerable sectors.
Despite overtures from outsiders, Omar made clear her position to remain in Congress , as well as her intention not to rush into presidential aspirations.
Respect for the lawsFernández recalled laws 20-23 on the Electoral System and 33-18 on Political Parties, which establish the deadlines for candidacies and the different levels of election. "It is my permanent position to respect the laws, and this time will be no exception," he emphasized.
Likewise, on previous occasions, Omar had reiterated his desire to see his father, Leonel Fernández, once again in the presidency of the Republic.
"Honestly, maybe it's not just me and my heart speaking. For me, it would be a dream come true to see President Leonel, my father, again wearing the presidential sash in 2028," he said during an event in March of this year.
