President Gustavo Petro says a halt to the bombing of Gaza would ease tensions in the Middle East.

President Gustavo Petro says a halt to the bombing of Gaza would ease tensions in the Middle East.
President Gustavo Petro has made various statements regarding the military escalation in the Middle East. In his latest message on X, he asserted that much of the tension would ease if Israel halted its military action against the population in the Gaza Strip.
According to the president, the current situation "began with the bombing of Palestinian children: the genocide of the people of Gaza." He asserted that the solution would lie in halting this military action.

“It all began with the bombing of Palestinian children: the genocide of the people of Gaza. Now we are close to a world war. Where does the solution begin? Netanyahu must stop bombing Palestine, call a truce, and stop putting all of humanity at risk,” the Colombian president concluded.
In another tweet, the President also warned that this conflict could trigger a new wave of inflation in Colombia, as Iran has proposed blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a passage through which 20 percent of the world's oil is transported. In this case, he said the way to avoid this is to adopt clean energy as quickly as possible.
"It is because of these circumstances that I have pressured the State and explained to society the need for energy transition as soon as possible," said President Petro.

The day before, the Colombian president had asked Donald Trump, President of the United States, not to participate in military actions in Iran. “The Trump administration must not participate in the war with Iran and the genocide in Gaza. The Trump administration must prevent war and genocide,” said the Colombian president, who stated that he was making this statement in his role as pro tempore president of CELAC: “I say this as president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.”

In addition to the various tweets, Colombia has used official channels to call for an end to tensions in the Middle East, which have escalated with the involvement of the United States.
"Colombia calls for diplomacy to avoid an escalation in the Middle East," begins the statement, which calls for a reduction in tensions in the region. Along these lines, the Foreign Ministry expressed "its deep concern" over what is currently happening in the region, which has involved multiple attacks between Iran and Israel and the recent US intervention in the conflict.
"We urge all parties involved to urgently return to the path of negotiation as the only responsible and lasting solution to the current crisis," the document states. Along these lines, it rejected the military escalation of recent hours.
"Colombia rejects the unilateral use of force, especially when it contravenes the fundamental principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and endangers international peace and stability," declared the organization led by Laura Sarabia.

Along these lines, the commitments to curb the development of nuclear weapons were recalled. "The nuclear non-proliferation regime constitutes an essential pillar of global security. Its weakening represents a direct threat to all of humanity," said the Foreign Ministry, which directly addressed Iran to urge it to return to compliance with these commitments.
"We urge the Islamic Republic of Iran to heed the call of the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency and to continue to fully and verifiably comply with its non-proliferation commitments," he said.
At the end of the message, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to a diplomatic solution. It also highlighted the "peaceful resolution of disputes and the strengthening of multilateralism as a path to preserving international peace and security."
