Sheinbaum and Trump: Clash of agendas at the G7 summit

Sheinbaum and Trump: Clash of agendas at the G7 summit

President Claudia Sheinbaum's participation in the G7 Summit in Canada is marked by a central event: her face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. This is not a mere protocol meeting; it is a high-caliber negotiation where the two leaders' conflicting agendas will collide, defining the course of bilateral relations on critical issues such as migration, trade, and security.

In the halls of Calgary, Canada, a diplomatic battle is being waged that will have direct repercussions on the lives of millions of Mexicans. President Sheinbaum, accompanied by a high-level cabinet that includes Secretaries Juan Ramón de la Fuente (Foreign Affairs) and Marcelo Ebrard (Economy), arrives at her first G7 meeting with a clear agenda to defend national interests. However, she faces a counterpart whose policy has hardened in recent weeks, creating a scenario of maximum tension.

The US president is approaching the negotiating table with a tough stance, particularly on the immigration issue. Through his communications channels, Trump has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to intensify and expand mass deportations, targeting so-called "sanctuary cities" like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

The White House's rhetoric has escalated, directly linking undocumented migrants to the expansion of Democratic electoral bases and the alleged "theft" of jobs and benefits from American citizens. This policy isn't just rhetoric; it translates into direct pressure on Mexico, which must prepare to receive a growing number of repatriated compatriots.

In the face of Trump's immigration offensive, the Mexican government has launched a containment strategy. At the morning press conference, led by Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez, details were provided on the progress of the "Mexico Embraces You" program, designed to welcome and reintegrate repatriated migrants.

This social and economic challenge is so real that the business sector has already reacted. The Business Coordinating Council (CCE) announced the availability of more than 70,000 job openings specifically for Mexicans returning from the United States, in an attempt to mitigate the impact of deportations.

Beyond migration, Sheinbaum and her team's priority is safeguarding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a pillar of the national economy, and strengthening security cooperation to combat fentanyl and cartels, but from a perspective of sovereignty and shared responsibilities.

The meeting is also a fascinating contrast of styles. Sheinbaum, in her debut on this global stage, projects an image of calm, data-driven leadership. Trump, for his part, is known for his transactional and disruptive diplomatic approach, preferring strong bilateral agreements over multilateral consensus.

This meeting did not occur in a vacuum. Sheinbaum's agenda includes meetings with other key leaders such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, demonstrating a strategy of diversifying alliances. However, the outcome of the conversation with Trump is what is capturing all the attention.

"I had 60 days, and they had 60 days, and on day 61… We've always supported Israel… Iran is not winning this war," Trump declared at the G7 meeting regarding the Middle East conflict, displaying his direct style and willingness to intervene in global crises.

The outcome of this in-person summit between Sheinbaum and Trump will not be measured by the cordiality of the handshake, but by the policies that emerge. It will set the tone for the complex relationship between the neighbors for the coming years, with a direct impact on the economy, security, and, above all, the fate of millions of people on both sides of the border.
