Ukraine is getting closer to Starlink. It will be the first country of its kind in Europe.

Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar has received approval from state regulators to begin testing Starlink Direct-to-Cell (D2C) services.

This is an important step towards preparing the commercial launch of satellite mobile communications and data transmission in the country.

Permission to conduct the tests was granted by the National Commission for the Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Postal Services (NCEC).

In times of war, when communication and connectivity are essential humanitarian needs, VEON and Kyivstar are committed to investing in technologies that keep Ukraine connected and maintain key communication channels, said VEON CEO Kaan Terzioglu.

Kyuivstar, part of the Dutch-registered VEON Group, has already successfully integrated its core mobile business with the Starlink infrastructure .

SIM card compatibility tests were also conducted with a partner technology assessment laboratory in the United States. The cards are compatible with the D2C system, which is key to launching services in Ukraine.

According to the British specialist portal Developing Telecoms, field tests will begin this year in selected regions in Ukraine, and in the initial phase, text communication solutions will be implemented.

If commercial services using the Starlink system are provided next year, Ukraine will be the first European country to benefit from the solutions offered by the company owned by Elon Musk.
