Olympic archery medalist Ángela Ruiz and Diego Villalobos, bronze medalist at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, lead the Mexican delegation that was presented the flag yesterday for the Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games.
The selected athletes, leaders in their respective disciplines, will conclude their youth careers at the competition, which is attended by 381 tricolor athletes.
It will be a different competition because I'm traveling with new teammates and I'm sure I'll hear some great stories. With the improvements I've made this year, I think I can aim to close out this stage with a good result
, said Ruiz.
Rommel Pacheco, head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, attended the ceremony, held at the National Center for the Development of Sports Talent and High Performance. He announced that a year's worth of incentives would be awarded to those who finish on the podium.
The gold medalist will receive a scholarship of 16,000 pesos, the silver medalist 14,000 pesos, and the bronze medalist 12,000 pesos. It's not just a prize; it's a monthly grant for their training and athletic needs
, the former diver explained.
Pacheco noted that although the institution he directs did not provide funds for the athletes' travel and expenses, it supported them in their preparation.
For these athletes to arrive here, their trip to the national team in Colombia, camps, and multidisciplinary preparation were necessary. They were provided with all the support they needed to be in optimal condition for the Games.
Freshly arrived from Singapore, Villalobos shared his excitement about representing Mexico again.
This entire generation is the one we'll surely see at Los Angeles 2028. The level will be very demanding just with the participation of the United States and Canada
, commented the Jalisco native, who will have to learn a new routine in just a few days.
I'll just finish this and put on my swimsuit
, he said.
Mario Delgado, Secretary of Education, presented the national flag to Ruiz and Etan Nuño, from cycling, the delegation's flag bearers.
The future of our country is in your hands. Compete with honor, but know that from today on, you are already winners
, he said.
In her turn, Marijose Alcalá, head of the Mexican Olympic Committee, highlighted the federal government's support for sports.
Each of you carries a story of perseverance and will echo the good things happening in our country. You all have the support of a President who believes in sports and youth. Carry the flag proudly to Asunción, because you represent the best of Mexico.
At the Pan American Games, which begin on August 9, the goal is to surpass the fourth-place finish they earned at Cali 2021.

One day after missing out on the podium at the San Sebastián Classic, Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro claimed victory at the Getxo Circuit. This is a prelude to the Vuelta a Burgos, which begins this Tuesday in the city's old town and concludes on Saturday in the Lagunas de Neila Natural Park.
Del Toro finished first, perfectly paired with his UAE Emirates teammate, Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who took second place. Alex Aranburu finished third.
Del Toro recovered after seeing his podium finish slip away from him on Saturday at the Donosti Classic. Despite leading for much of the race, on the climb near the final flat section before the finish, his legs gave out on him to challenge Italian Giulio Ciccone, who went on to win that race.
In this Sunday's race, however, the Ensenada native was able to shake off the bitter taste of missing the podium. In the San Sebastián race, not only did he run out of power a few kilometers from the finish line, but two rivals even overtook him a few meters from the finish line, dropping him to fifth place.
Yesterday, everything went perfectly for UAE, who secured a 1-2 finish and saw their promising young rider acquire the solidity of an elite cyclist. This 172.2-kilometer circuit was a fantastic challenge for him to establish himself and be ready for the stage race in Burgos, as it allowed him to gel very well with his team.
At the end of the competition, the young man from Ensenada proudly wore the txapela (traditional beret) and a trophy shaped like a windmill that certified him the winner of the Getxo Circuit.
Del Toro acknowledged that he feels strongly supported by the UAE, a key factor in continuing the successes that peaked this year with his second-place finish at the Giro d'Italia.
I'm quite happy about all of this and how the team is supporting me. I feel very supported and also proud of the people who are supporting me outside
, said Del Toro at the end of the race and although he admitted that 2025 has been key to establishing himself among the elite, he warned that he takes successes in stride.
"I'd like to be optimistic and say that everything is fine
," the young Baja California native said. " But anything can happen. I think what I'm experiencing isn't so normal, so to speak, and I just want to keep enjoying it
."
And this victory delighted her greatly, as she teamed up with Ayuso. Both worked effectively to finish on the podium and demonstrated that, despite rumors of discomfort on the Spaniard's part during the Giro, they know how to take responsibility for the team. Del Toro explained that from the start, they tried to dictate the pace throughout the race to make the finish less difficult, something that didn't work in the San Sebastián Classic the day before.
Now, Del Toro will once again test himself in a stage race, seeking to repeat his triumph at the Tour of Austria and improve on his role as a young star.
Ferrand-Prévôt, champion of the Tour de France
Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt won the women's Tour de France in her first appearance, launching an attack to take the final stage and extend her lead from a day earlier.
She was 3:42 seconds ahead of 2023 champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands and 4:09 seconds ahead of defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland.

Budapest. Lando Norris held off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in a dramatic finish to take victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix and bolster his Formula One title hopes heading into the mid-season break.
With worn tires, Norris was able to resist Piastri's onslaught in the closing laps, crossing the finish line at the Hungaroring with a margin of less than a second.
After securing McLaren's 200th F1 victory, Norris closed Piastri's lead in the drivers' standings. The gap between them is now nine points. "I'm dead. It was tough, it was tough
," Lando said. "The last stint, with Oscar closing in, I had to push as hard as I could
."
It was a race shaped by both clever strategy and bold driving. Norris briefly dropped back to fifth on the opening lap, but made the most of his tires to make just one pit stop.
Australian Piastri, on the other hand, changed tires twice.
“The last stint was difficult, with Oscar closing in, so I pushed hard,” Norris said. “It was a perfect result. I didn't expect to win with that strategy
.”
Piastri gradually closed in on Norris's lead in the final stages of the race. Piastri nearly collided with his teammate while attempting to overtake on the penultimate lap.
Still, it was Norris who held firm to climb to the top of the podium heading into F1's four-week break.
I pushed as hard as I could. When I saw Lando was only going to make one stop, I knew I had to overtake him on the track, but it's easier said than done here
, Piastri noted.
George Russell took third place for Mercedes after overtaking the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, who received a time penalty for nearly colliding with Russell while defending his position.
Defending champion Max Verstappen finished a distant ninth, hampered by his Red Bull's lack of pace throughout the weekend. The Dutchman remains third in the standings but has dropped 97 points behind leader Piastri, in another blow to a title defense that seems unlikely.

América recorded its second historic rout in the Liga MX Femenil after thrashing Querétaro 11-0 yesterday in a matchday four match played at the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium, thus regaining the overall lead and extending its unbeaten streak in the 2025 Apertura tournament.
After crushing the defunct Morelia 12-1 in 2018, the Águilas won again by more than 10 goals.
Thanks to goals from Kiana Palacios (in the 16th, 66th and 88th minutes), Kimberly Rodríguez (25), Montserrat Saldívar (36th, 39th, 50th and 78th), Bruna Vilamala (53rd), Irene Guerrero (70th) and Scarlett Camberos (83rd), the Coapa team reached 12 points and moved to the top of the standings. Gallos Blancos, who have not been able to win in the current competition, remained in 16th place with one point.
Ángel Villacampa's team surprised their opponents in the 16th minute, when Palacios connected with a pass from Jana Gutiérrez in the box to make it 1-0.
Just moments later, in the 25th minute, Rodríguez made it 2-0 for the Azulcremas with a header, following an assist from Guerrero.
From that moment on, the home side's celebration began, while Gallos Blancos were unable to trouble goalkeeper Sandra Paños.
Saldívar took advantage of the visiting defense's vulnerability to score a brace in the 36th and 39th minutes to make it 4-0, and at the start of the second half, he scored again in the 50th minute to make it 5-0.
Vilamala, the Eagles' newest addition, also contributed to the rout, scoring his first league goal in the 53rd minute to make it 6-0.
Fernando Samayoa's squad, overwhelmed by the Águilas' offensive power, had no chance of responding and suffered five more blows from Palacios (twice), Guerrero, Saldívar, and Camberos, resulting in one of the worst defeats in their history.
At Cuauhtémoc Stadium, Monterrey, with a hat trick from their new signing, Australian Emily Gielnik, humiliated Puebla 5-0 and earned their third consecutive victory.
The goals for the Monterrey team, which reached nine points and moved into third place in the standings, came from Carol Cázares (14th minute), Gielnik (19th, 48th, and 58th), and Allison Veloz (73rd). La Franja, which has lost four games in a row, remained in second-to-last place (17th), with no points.
On the other hand, Monterrey regretted the death threats and cyberbullying by some of its fans towards Mexican referee Katia Itzel García, whom they blamed for the defeat against FC Cincinnati in the Leagues Cup .
"Aggressions, such as those reported by Katia Itzel García, and any other type of violence, are unacceptable and we must make them visible, denounce them, reject them, and avoid normalizing them
," the club said in a statement posted on its social media.
