San Diego., Mexican Randy Arozarena hit a three-run home run off Michael King in the fourth inning and the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners beat the San Diego Padres 6-1 to sweep the inaugural Vedder Cup Series.
The Mariners hit six home runs and outscored their rivals in the three-game Vedder Cup series, named after Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who has ties to both cities.
The two teams, which share a spring training complex, formalized the competition in March. The winner receives a trophy with a guitar provided by the musician, who was born in a Chicago suburb and is a Cubs fan. The teams will face off again from August 25-27 in Seattle.
Bryan Woo (5-1) cooled off after allowing a leadoff home run on an 0-2 count to Fernando Tatis Jr., leaving Woo with just one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out five, issued no walks, and retired his last 11 batters and 16 of his last 17.
King (4-2) held the Padres hitless until Arozarena homered in the fourth inning. The Mariners followed with four straight hits, including a run-scoring double by Leody Taveras.
In another game, the tricolor Isaac Paredes hit a three-run homer against reliever Robert García to give the Houston Astros a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers.
Rookie Jack Leiter allowed a solo home run to Yainer Díaz with two outs in the seventh, narrowing Houston's deficit. The 25-year-old right-hander was replaced after consecutive singles by Jake Meyers and Cam Smith to start the eighth.
Outfielder Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam in the New York Yankees' 8-2 victory over the Mets, while the defending champion Dodgers fell 6-4 to the Angels.
In the Mexican Baseball League, the Diablos Rojos swept the Bravos de León in the series after winning 10-6 with a fiery offense in the third game in a duel that was significant for Japhet Amador, played at Domingo Santana Stadium.
The Mulegé giant hit his 250th career home run with a blast in the sixth inning. The home run also drove in the Scarlets to tie the score and begin a comeback that would lead to victory.
