Washington. American tennis player Venus Williams returned to the court after 16 months away from the professional circuit. The winner of 21 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles defeated Canadian Eugénie Bouchard and local player Clervie Ngounoue 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the DC Open in Washington.
Williams, 45, smiled in disbelief, as did the other three players who participated in the game before a packed court and the watchful eye of NBA star Kevin Durant.
It's great to be able to play. My situation this year is very different than last year. It's like night and day. Being able to be here and prepare for the tournament instead of preparing for surgery is great
, said Williams, who spoke in an interview with NBC earlier this month about having surgery to remove uterine fibroids.
