Bucaramanga came close to achieving the feat, but failed on penalties and was left out of the Copa Sudamericana against Mineiro.

Atlético Bucaramanga came close to glory in Brazil, tying the series with Atlético Mineiro in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs with a 1-0 victory, but then, in a dramatic penalty shootout, they were eliminated from the tournament. Mineiro will face Godoy Cruz of Argentina in the round of 16.
The Leopards had reason to believe when they found the winning goal, and thus the equalizer on the aggregate scoreboard. It was from a cross from Fabián Sambueza straight into the box that Mena rose to power home a lethal header to make it 0-1 in the dying moments of the first half, in the 44th minute. The Colombian side held firm, not allowing the home side to equalize, and thus they went to the penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Scarpa missed for the Brazilians, and the excitement grew. Henao also missed his shot. Goalkeeper Quintana rose to the occasion and saved Bernard's shot. It was Jefferson Mena's turn, and he blasted it over the goal. Leonel Álvarez couldn't believe it; for the second time, the lead was gone. But then Zárate missed, and that was dramatic. Goalkeeper Everson took the decisive shot, scored, and eliminated the Leopards.
Bucaramanga had a great run, playing a game with a lot of personality, character, and order in Brazil. Luck wasn't on their side in the penalty shootout; they lacked a cool head on the take, and so the dream ends.
