Chess Videos | Kasparian's Artwork Makes for a Great Photo

Chess Videos | Kasparian's Artwork Makes for a Great Photo

Extensive beauty and great practical utility are often the two most praised virtues of a good artistic ending. This video more than meets those requirements, and adds another, making it unforgettable for any fan, no matter how short their memory; such is the level of astonishment of the final position, after White sacrifices a large part of his assets to guarantee checkmate.

The author of this marvel cannot be missing from any list of history's greatest: Genrij Kasparyan (1910-1995), composer of more than 600 etudes, 57 of which won first prizes. Although he was born in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and spent much of his life there, his family, his soul, and his surname were Armenian—in fact, Kasparyan was Gari Kasparov's real surname, but his Armenian mother Russified it for fear of xenophobic discrimination—and it was in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, that he died at the age of 85. Needless to say, he was a regular on The Corner of the Immortals, whose even-numbered videos, since 500, have been dedicated to artistic endings.
