Francisco Maturana revealed an anecdote on the same road where Diogo Jota died in an accident: 'I broke my record'

Francisco Maturana revealed an anecdote on the same road where Diogo Jota died in an accident: 'I broke my record'
While Spanish authorities continue to investigate the accident that killed Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, also a footballer, André Silva, on July 3 in Colombia, former coach Francisco Maturana recalled an anecdote on the same road.
The road accident occurred on the A-52 highway in Cernadilla (Zamora, Spain), when the Lamborghini Huracán, which according to a Civil Guard report was being driven by Diogo himself, left the road, collided, and subsequently caught fire.

Speaking to the sports podcast Línea de Gol , published by the newspaper El Colombiano , 'Pacho' Maturana said he drove on that road when he was a coach in Spain. “That road is completely flat and straight. In my youth, I sought out personal challenges and sometimes traveled at night. The road was immaculate, and one night, while meeting with the president of Real Madrid to plan next season's team, I broke my speed record,” he revealed.
It's worth remembering that Maturana led the technical team of Real Valladolid and Atlético de Madrid in Spain.
In his account for the aforementioned podcast, Maturana revealed that the next day he told his "feat" to a close football official, Camilo Segoviano, who, instead of congratulating him, questioned him: "That doesn't seem interesting to me, because you're risking your life unnecessarily," Segoviano told him.
“Camilo, there's no traffic at that time of day, and that road is fantastic,” Maturana responded to the manager, who, with his experience with car speeds, was more emphatic. “There's always the possibility of a tire bursting at high speed. It's not worth risking your life like that, not for excitement or pride,” said Segoviano , who explained that he had worked for 15 years in a tire factory and that, even with perfect pavement, tires can burst.

On the occasion of the tragic accident involving Diogo Jota and his brother, which has shocked the world of football, Maturana, now with the wisdom that comes with age, left a reflection on the podcast: "That's still relevant today because speed in a sports car is almost like playing with your life. What happened to Jota is a message, above all, for young people."
The funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva took place last Saturday, July 5, in Gondomar, in northern Portugal, where they grew up and became footballers.
