Hot air balloon crashes in Teotihuacán: 12 injured (VIDEOS)


MEXICO CITY (apro).- On the morning of Friday, May 23, 2025, a hot air balloon from the company Sky Balloons Mexico suffered an accident in the municipality of San Martín de las Pirámides, State of Mexico . According to local authorities, the balloon suffered a tear in its structure while flying over the area, which resulted in it crashing.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Tuxpan Avenue in the Centro neighborhood of the aforementioned municipality. Fourteen people were traveling in the balloon, who suffered bruises and scrapes after the impact, according to reports from the emergency services responding to the incident. Among the injured were domestic and foreign tourists, including one person from the United States and two from Colombia.

Passengers treated by emergency servicesCivil Protection paramedics and firefighters arrived in three ambulances to treat the injured passengers. All were stabilized at the scene and taken to a clinic for further medical evaluation. No fatalities have been reported so far.
Authorities investigate safety conditionsCivil Protection personnel from the State of Mexico are on site to begin the corresponding investigations . A review will also be conducted of the operating company, Sky Balloons Mexico, to determine if they were complying with current safety regulations.
History of accidents in TeotihuacánThis accident adds to others reported in recent years. On April 1, 2023, a balloon caught fire and crashed near the archaeological site, leaving a couple dead and their 13-year-old daughter with burns and fractures. The pilot was later arrested for alleged homicide and injuries.
In January 2025, another balloon crash-landed in Axapusco, injuring two foreign tourists. In October 2024, three hot air balloons were forced to make emergency landings in the Granjas Familiares and ejidos communities of Tepexpan due to gusts of wind, leaving three people injured.
