Paris. With the exception of the elimination of reigning runner-up Jasmine Paolini, the start of the Roland Garros round of 16 offered no major surprises, with world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz dominating a combative Ben Shelton, while Iga Swiatek rallied to stay in the tournament.

Alcaraz secured his place in the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 7-6 (10/8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Ben Sheldon in three hours and 22 minutes. He thus remains firmly on track to retain the Parisian title.

Former number one Iga Swiatek of Poland remains in the race to become the first woman to win four Roland Garros titles, after beating Kazakh Elena Rybakina (11) 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

World number 1 Aryna Sabalenka won 7-5, 6-3 against American Amanda Anisimova (16) and will face Chinese Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, seventh in the world.

PSG crown celebrations leave two dead

Paris. Paris Saint-Germain were cheered by their fans yesterday with chants, flags, and flares in an emotional victory parade in the French capital, one day after winning their first Champions League title after crushing Inter Milan 5-0 in the tournament final in Munich. Unfortunately, the celebrations left two people dead.

After landing at Roissy-en-Provence Airport, the Parisian club headed straight to the Champs-Élysées, where everything was ready for the welcome: two open-top buses and 100,000 people awaiting the arrival of their heroes.

During the 40-minute parade, the players, who wore special shirts with the number 25 (for the year 2025) on the back for the occasion, greeted a crowd that had been waiting for years for the first Big Ears in the club's history and the second in French football, after the one won by Olympique de Marseille in 1993.

The captain, the Brazilian Marquinhos, was one of the most active with the microphone, starting chants and claiming this season's Ballon d'Or for his teammate Ousmane Dembele, who was yesterday named by UEFA as the best player of the recently concluded Champions League .

Coach Luis Enrique and President Nasser Al Khelaifi also enjoyed the atmosphere aboard one of the buses, which traveled to the Arc de Triomphe and toured it, at which point fireworks were launched.

Following the parade, the delegation was received at the Élysée Palace by President Emmanuel Macron, who took advantage of the event to condemn the unacceptable incidents that had left the celebrations marred by mourning for two deaths.

Nothing can justify what happened; violent clashes are unacceptable. We will pursue, we will punish, and we will be relentless , Macron said, before congratulating the players individually.

One of the deceased was a 17-year-old boy who died in a stabbing in the town of Dax, and the other was a man riding a motorcycle in Paris who was hit by a car.

The Interior Ministry reported that 559 people were arrested, 491 in the French capital, where most of the incidents occurred. According to a provisional report, there were 692 fires, 264 of them involving vehicles.

In a message on X, the Parisian club condemned the incidents in a moment of collective happiness, not of agitation or riots , and called on fans to show responsibility and respect so that the historic victory remains a moment of pride shared by all .
