Ruud-Draper | Schedule, TV channel, and where to watch the men's final in Madrid today.
The Mutua Madrid Open is coming to a close, and Casper Ruud and Jack Draper are making their final appearances. They're two newcomers to the Caja Mágica final, but they have all the attributes to put on a great show.
The 26-year-old Norwegian, ranked 14th in the world, heads into this final day of the tournament with a good layer of confidence after overcoming his own personal problems and defeating opponents such as Rinderknech (6-3, 6-4), Korda (6-3, 6-3), Fritz (7-5, 6-4), Medvedev (6-3, 7-5) and Cerúndolo (6-4, 7-5). Ruud also boasts a very good record on clay, with eleven of his twelve titles having come on this surface.
He's reached two Masters 1000 finals, in Monte Carlo in 2024, which he lost to Tsitsipas, and in Miami in 2022, which he lost to Alcaraz. So he can only hope that the third time will be the charm, as he said after the semifinal. "It's a bit ironic, because I started 2024 much better than this year, but now I'm back in a final. And I hope I can win this time. I'll do everything possible for that, and I'm ready to achieve it. But if not, life goes on and I'll be the same person, and I'll keep looking for the first major title of my career."
He's happy to be a tennis player again, after going through a low in spirits during which he needed help to get out. "The life of a tennis player is a difficult one in many ways, with many days of traveling, and there comes a time when you feel like it's all too much. Sometimes you feel like you're on a hamster wheel. I'm glad I was honest with myself and realized I needed help. It's worked wonders for me, and I found a quick response. It's helped me to have someone to talk to about certain things. Now I feel happier and wake up every day with a smile," he admitted sincerely to the microphones. Just as he was with this newspaper when he confessed last year that he had been weighed down by the burden of not having won even 500 titles before the 2024 Conde de Godó.
He already has one of these 1,000-ranked players on this final day of the tournament in Madrid. Jack Draper, who knocked the door out of the top ten thanks to his powerful left hand, was crowned champion in Indian Wells last March after defeating opponents such as Fonseca, Fritz, Shelton, Alcaraz, and Rune. At 23, he has grown both tennis-wise and physically, having admitted that his performance was a bit lacking before this growth spurt of recent months. "I needed to be consistent, trust in the work I was doing, have the right mindset, and do things well day in and day out," he explained about his journey to the top of the table.
Two styles converge in this final: solidity, earthy resources, and patience from Ruud, a two-time Roland Garros finalist and a star student of Rafa Nadal's academy; power, aggression, and serve from Draper. The outcome of this clash of opinions will be decided this Sunday, as the Norwegian and the Briton have never faced each other.
The men's final between Ruud and Draper is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at the Manolo Santana Stadium.
Before, at 3:30 p.m., the women's doubles final will be played between Sorana Cirstea/Anna Kalinskaya against Veronica Kudermetova/Elise Mertens.
The match between Ruud and Draper will be broadcast on Televisión Española and Movistar, the two platforms that hold the rights to the Mutua Madrid Open.
