MEXICO CITY (apro).- President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the Mexican man who died while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the United States registered with a different name and nationality, in the context of the raids ordered by President Donald Trump.

"This is a person who registered under a different name and didn't register his nationality until the entire investigation conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he said this morning.

The Mexican president explained that more information was also requested to determine the circumstances of this person's death.

"The entire investigation must be conducted, and we will always seek respect for the human rights of all Mexicans abroad," he added.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on June 7, a Mexican citizen died at an ICE detention center in Stewart, Georgia, where the U.S. agency no longer allows Mexican Consulate staff in Atlanta to enter to interview Mexicans.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry reported that the man died after being transferred from the Jacksonville prison to the ICE center, and indicated that it had contacted his family and authorities to "clarify the facts, confirm the official cause of death, and provide legal advice and support to the family."

The case comes amid a surge in anti-immigrant operations carried out by ICE under the direction of the Donald Trump administration, in which agency agents have been accused of committing abuses.
