The CAS upholds the appeal of 10 Expansión MX clubs to reactivate promotion and relegation.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that 10 Liga MX Expansion teams have filed a formal appeal against the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) demanding the return of the promotion and relegation system to Mexican soccer.
This request is in response to the suspension implemented since the 2019-2020 season , justified by the FMF due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic effects.
The clubs that promoted the appeal seek to have promotion and relegation be in effect again starting with the 2025-2026 cycle , while the current FMF project contemplates it until the 2026-2027 season.

The teams that signed this legal action are: Atlante, Atlético La Paz, Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, Cimarrones de Sonora, Alebrijes de Oaxaca, Mineros de Zacatecas, Venados, Leones Negros de la UdeG and Jaiba Brava .
All of them are looking to recover a competitive format that will allow them to aspire to reach the Liga MX on sporting merit.
The CAS detailed that the parties are currently exchanging written submissions. Once this process is complete, the date for the corresponding hearing will be set, in agreement with both parties involved.
Prior to the CAS confirmation, the FMF had stated that it had not received any formal notification regarding the proceedings.
In a statement, the Federation assured that, if notified, it will present its position to the relevant authorities.
Although international media outlets such as The New York Times and The Athletic recently reported on this appeal, Mediotiempo reported that the Expansion clubs' initiative has been in the works for approximately a year .
This action could rekindle the debate about competitiveness and fairness in Mexican soccer, especially regarding the role of the Expansion League as a true development category.
