The truck driver who filmed the video of Diogo Jota and his brother's accident: "I stopped and tried to help, but there was nothing I could do."

The truck driver who filmed the video of Diogo Jota and his brother's accident: "I stopped and tried to help, but there was nothing I could do."

His name is José Azevedo , and he says he recorded another video, which was shared by a Madeiran media outlet, Funchal Noticias, to respond to comments criticizing him for filming the accident in which the Silva brothers, Diogo Jota and André , died. "I filmed it, I stopped, I tried to help, but unfortunately I couldn't do anything. My conscience is clear," the truck driver explains.

In a four-minute segment, the driver first shows how his name on the truck's dashboard matches the one seen in the video of the accident, as well as a mark on the windshield. He then proceeds to explain what happened at that kilometer point on the A-52, a road he travels several times a week.

"The family has my word that they weren't speeding. I could see the make and color of the car when they passed me. They were driving very calmly," the professional begins, discrediting the expert report from the Zamora Traffic Brigade, which pointed to "excessive speed" as one of the probable causes of the accident, in addition to a problem with a wheel.

"I know what road it is and I've seen some truly outrageous things from other cars, but they were driving very calmly. It's dark, and yet I could see the make and color of the vehicle perfectly. Later, unfortunately, it ended in the collision," the truck driver explains, referring to the fate of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who were unable to determine whether a problem with a wheel, as the Civil Guard also suggested, could have been behind the tragedy.

He also explains that, when he stopped filming, he got out of his truck with a fire extinguisher to try to help put out the flames that were engulfing the entire vehicle, but he found it impossible. "I know what I went through that night because I didn't know who was inside. My deepest condolences to the family," the supporting actor notes.

Another driver quoted by the Portuguese media outlet CM corroborates Azevedo's account. José Aleixo Duarte also claims to have witnessed the accident firsthand. This truck driver explained that the occupants of the Lamborghini Huracán overtook him shortly before the tragic accident and maintains that he was not speeding.
