Gothic castles, waterfalls, and magical landscapes: discover the real-life settings of the second season of Wednesday.

Almost three years after its first—and successful—season, Jenna Ortega returns to embody television's most sinister little girl in the second season of Wednesday. She does so from the Nevermore Academy, where she will discover her family's best-kept secrets and, despite her initial resistance, meet a key character: her peculiar roommate, Enid, who is also the personification of everything the Addams' eldest daughter hates.
However, in this new season of Tim Burton's series, the story leaves the Romanian corridors of the first installment to move to a much greener and mistier setting: Ireland . Gothic castles, centuries-old cemeteries, and mansions surrounded by fog become the perfect backdrop for the mysteries of Nevermore.
From historic fortresses like Charleville Castle to fairytale landscapes like Powerscourt Estate, the series delves into locations that feel like they're straight out of a Victorian horror novel , giving the production an even darker, more cinematic feel.
Charleville CastleLocated in the heart of County Offaly , just outside Tullamore, Charleville Castle is an imposing 19th-century neo-Gothic castle surrounded by dense woodland. It is said to be 'the most haunted castle in Europe', a title fueled by the many legends surrounding it. The most famous is that of Harriet, the youngest daughter of the Bury family, who died after falling down a staircase and whose spirit, according to visitors and film crews, still haunts the fortress's halls.
For the second season of Wednesday , this enclave has served as the main setting to recreate the academy with Gothic halls, towers and corridors provided authenticity, allowing for a reliance solely on digital effects or studio sets.
The challenge was to make this setting fit with the previous season's : "It fit perfectly with the location they used for Nevermore in Romania last year," says location supervisor Maria O'Connor. The location team found a strikingly similar spot on a private estate in County Wicklow, about 100 miles away. "There was a tree in exactly the same place as there was another tree in Romania, it was incredible.
County WicklowThe scenes depicting the home of the villainous Kansas City Scalper, played by Haley Joel Osment, were filmed in Newcastle, County Wicklow, Ireland. Although the plot is set in a Kansas suburb, all scenes were filmed in an Irish neighborhood of Newcastle, carefully designed to resemble a typical, worn-out American street. To achieve this, the production painted the facades, altered the front gardens, and created a perfectly scruffy and decaying atmosphere.
Powerscourt HouseAnother of the most notable locations in the filming of the second installment of Wednesday is Powerscourt Estate, a luxurious estate about 20 kilometers south of Dublin. Its history dates back to the 13th century, although the current Georgian mansion and its spectacular 18th-century gardens are now the main tourist attraction. Among its most famous spots is the Powerscourt Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in Ireland, surrounded by a lush forest that has served as a setting for films and series thanks to its fairytale atmosphere.
Powerscourt is proud of its long cinematic history, with classics such as Laurence Olivier's Henry V and Excalibur , and more recent films such as Little Women (2017), Cocaine Bear and The Green Knight all filmed on its premises.
One of the most recognizable symbols of Powerscourt Estate are the two life-size pegasi that appear to guard the large lake in front of the mansion. These winged horse sculptures are not just an ornamental element: they are part of the coat of arms of the Wingfield family, the estate's historical owners , and reinforce the sense of being in an almost mythical place. The central fountain in the lake, meanwhile, is inspired by the Fontana del Tritone in Piazza Barberini, Rome, a detail that reveals the classical taste that dominated the property's renovation in the 18th century.
