Neither Calahonda nor La Herradura: Granada's hidden beach in an almost virgin landscape

Neither Calahonda nor La Herradura: Granada's hidden beach in an almost virgin landscape

Granada is often an ideal destination in Spain to learn about the culture of our past. Visiting the Alhambra , going to the Mirador de San Nicolás , or walking along the Paseo de los Tristes are some of the activities you can enjoy in this area. Of course, this isn't the only option; it's also a good choice for those who prefer to enjoy the tranquility of the sea on a beach.

In this province, you can choose from several coastal areas, but one of the most striking is located between Calahonda and Castell de Ferro , very close to the city of Motril: La Rijana beach . This natural area is practically unspoiled, a place to escape the crowds during the summer.

This is La Rijana beach

This beach is 250 meters long and 20 meters wide. It is made up of medium-coarse sand and pebbles, and one of its most notable features is that it is surrounded by cliffs and large rocks , giving it a special beauty. Another of its most striking features is the remains of a Roman tower that stand out among these rocks.

Being a small coastal area, it's not usually in high demand by tourists who come to Granada in search of sun and sand. Its crystal-clear waters are a great attraction. One of the recommendations when visiting this place is to wear appropriate footwear due to the pebbles found in the area.

What to see in Motril

After a swim at La Rijana beach, you can visit Motril . A must-see is its old town. There, you'll discover a labyrinth of narrow streets and squares that hide a wealth of history. Among its most emblematic buildings are the Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación and the Town Hall .

Another fascinating place is the Nasrid Garden , one of the city's most historic gardens. It's an example of Moorish architecture and gardening, with fountains, ponds, and spectacular vegetation. The Parque de los Pueblos de América is a botanical garden where you can see different varieties of plants from the Americas.

And located atop a hill with panoramic views of Motril is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Head . It's a peaceful area that invites you to relax and admire this place.
