Driven by rising rearmament spending, the defense sector is attracting interest. Telecoms operator Orange announced on June 30 the launch of a department dedicated to defense and security services, a project mentioned by La Lettre on June 12. This department is attached to the business services subsidiary Orange Business. "Thanks to their existing mobile or fixed infrastructure, telecoms operators have a role to play in the resilience of defense stakeholders," is the conviction of Nassima Auvray, responsible for managing this activity.

She points out that in Ukraine, in addition to Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite constellation, soldiers relied on public telecom networks. In France, the Radio Network of the Future, the new telecommunications tool for law enforcement and firefighters, which is gradually coming into service this year, uses 5G antennas from Bouygues Telecom and Orange.

According to the same scheme, the operator estimates that armed forces or defense groups could use its 45,000 kilometers of terrestrial optical fiber or its 450,000 kilometers of submarine cables to ensure their communications.
