Smoking will be banned on beaches, in public gardens and near schools from July 1

The measure was expected, particularly by anti-smoking organizations. The government announced, through Catherine Vautrin, Minister of Labor, Health, Solidarity and Families, the ban on smoking in many outdoor public spaces . As of July 1, smoking in parks, public gardens, beaches, bus shelters, sports facilities, as well as around schools will be banned. This was announced by the minister in an interview with the newspaper Ouest-France on Thursday, May 29, on the occasion of No Tobacco Day, which takes place on Saturday. "Where there are children, tobacco must disappear," she said. The objective is clear: to protect the youngest from exposure to tobacco.
Middle and high schools will also be affected by the ban, in particular to prevent "middle and high school students from smoking in front of their establishments" .
Failure to comply with the ban "may result in a class 4 fine, or 135 euros," said Ms. Vautrin, who emphasized that the freedom to smoke "ends where children's right to breathe clean air begins." This decree, drawn up with the Association of Mayors of France, "is currently being finalized with the Council of State."
