A fire of undetermined origin hit the town of Rove in Bouches-du-Rhône overnight, mobilizing nearly 350 firefighters and requiring the evacuation of 150 people.

A fire broke out overnight from Friday to Saturday in a mountain range in the commune of Rove, about fifteen kilometers northwest of Marseille, leaving 150 people in need of shelter, firefighters said. According to the firefighters, this is the " first major fire of the season" in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, which has been on orange heatwave alert since June 27.

The alarm was raised at 3:30 a.m. The fire, of undetermined origin, had swept through 100 hectares of scrub and forest by 8 a.m., according to the latest update from the fire department. Nearly 350 firefighters are mobilized on site, supported by aerial resources, including a water-bombing helicopter. "Conditions are favorable for the moment," said the communications department of the Bouches-du-Rhône fire department.

"150 people were evacuated and brought to safety at the port of La Vesse," located below the town, and "everything is being done to protect homes," he added. Crossed by the Nerthe massif, Le Rove, a town of 5,200 inhabitants, is located on the very touristy Côte Bleue which runs along the coves northwest of Marseille, and is home to the famous Niolon cove.
