“Six Feet on Earth”: The Ocean Is Not a Silent World, by Maxime Dangles

The underwater world constantly resonates. Sounds produced by the species that inhabit it, but also those generated by human activity. Producer Maximes Dangles has harnessed these sounds for a project combining art and science. He shared his story with us in 2022, as part of a series we're republishing a few days before the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice (June 9-13).

The oceans cover nearly 71% of our planet's surface. They feed us and regulate the Earth's temperature and climate. But they are under threat.
For this fifth and final episode of our series “Oceans, Sanctuaries or El Dorado?”, we gave the floor to Maxime Dangles, electronic music producer.
For four years, this artist from Valence, France, has been participating in Sonars, a project that combines art and science, in partnership between La Carène, a contemporary music venue in Brest Métropole, and the Franco-Quebec laboratory BeBEST .
Using sounds recorded underwater by researchers—particularly in Arctic regions—he produces works and live performances in spatialized sound. For him, it's not just about capturing underwater soundscapes disrupted by climate change, but also about provoking emotions. This is his mission, he tells us.
