Arles 2025: “On Country,” from Aborigines to settlers, Australia from end to bush

This is the poster for the 56th edition of the Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles : a little black boy, upright and proud, posing in a superhero costume, cape blowing in the wind against an azure blue sky, standing on a rusty old car. The pride and candor of this photograph permeate the entire festival, but especially the fascinating exhibition from Australia, the first of its kind in Arles, which finally shines a light on a continent of inspiring artists and photographers, committed to depicting the diversity and fragility of their territory.

This portrait is the result of a collaboration between photographers Tony Albert and David Charles Collins and the remote community of Warakurna in Australia's Northern Territory, a sparsely populated region with desert landscapes. Tony Al
