Benzodiazepines: fewer tablets in boxes to reduce addiction

Benzodiazepines: fewer tablets in boxes to reduce addiction

"These medications are subject to persistent misuse . They are often used beyond the recommended treatment duration, which ranges from a few days to three weeks," the health authority emphasizes.

However, the risk of addiction increases with the dose and duration of treatment. "Reducing the number of tablets in the boxes reduces the risk of prolonged use and therefore the risk of addiction," explains the ANSM.

Use from “a few days” to “a few weeks”

Drugs belonging to the benzodiazepine class treat the symptoms of sleep disorders, but not their causes.

Used for insomnia, "these benzodiazepines should only be prescribed for a short period, from a few days to three weeks, due to the risk of dependence, the risk of effects that can impair driving, but also of memory problems and falls," explains the ANSM.
