Historian Jean-Pierre Azéma died on July 14, 2025, at the age of 88. The son of a collaborationist journalist, he devoted his career to trying to shed light on the Occupation period through its two aspects: resistance and collaboration.

He made his debut this year in the Petit Larousse dictionary of proper names. Historian Jean-Pierre Azéma died on Monday, July 14, at the age of 87, his family announced. A distinguished specialist on the occupation, he distinguished himself in particular by his knowledge of every nook and cranny of this troubled period of history, which he had pioneered. "He was an exceptional historian, one of the pioneers to write about the Occupation," said Henry Rousso, also a historian specializing in Vichy France, of which the deceased was "the master."
