IN PICTURES. Cannes Film Festival 2025: Tom Cruise, Aïssa Maïga and Zoe Saldaña, punchy stars for a musical ascent of the red carpet

An orchestra performing the iconic theme song from "Mission: Impossible" and stars transforming the red carpet into a veritable playground. Plenty of action during this second red carpet.

Every day has its own spectacle. After an emotional opening night, the Cannes Film Festival continues with a second grandiose red carpet. On Wednesday evening, May 14, a host of international stars walk the red carpet to attend the latest "Mission: Impossible. " A sober Tom Cruise makes a remarkable arrival in a car alongside the film's crew. On the red carpet, actresses follow one another: the mischievous Zoe Saldaña, the statuesque Aïssa Maïga, and the legendary Andie MacDowell leave a big impression. We don't know where to look next.

The red carpet brilliantly illustrates the diversity of cinema offered by the festival. The out-of-competition blockbuster "Mission: Impossible. The Final Reckoning" and its team parade alongside the arthouse film "Promis le ciel" selected to open the Un Certain Regard section. United on the red carpet, the Franco-Tunisian director Erige Sehiri and her team offer a socially engaged drama. This is the beauty of the Cannes Film Festival: genres and their representatives coexist harmoniously within this "profane temple where all cinemas are welcome," according to the words of the master of ceremonies, Laurent Lafitte.

In a dramatic turn of events, an orchestra bursts in to close this second ascent of the steps. To the catchy tune of Lalo Schifrin, the "Mission: Impossible" cast and crew join the Palais des Festivals to kick off the screening of the latest film in the franchise.

This won't be the first, nor the last, time that the Mission: Impossible agents break the rules. The film crew whips out a phone, banned on the red carpet, for a selfie that's already iconic. (SAMEER AL-DOUMY / AFP)
Halle Berry looks spectacular, showing off a magnificent, puffy gown for her second appearance on the red carpet. Just think, the day before, the jury member had to give up her outfit (a Gaurav Gupta creation) due to the new dress code rules in effect on the red carpet. (ANTONIN THUILLIER / AFP)

Rock 'n' roll actress Andie MacDowell sports an elegant black tuxedo for a tomboyish look. The L'Oréal muse will no doubt walk the red carpet again to support her daughter, actress Margaret Qualley, who stars in the film.
