This year, the Rencontres d'Arles is devoting a section of its program to "Family Stories." The plural is appropriate, as the notion of kinship is so variable here. Between biological family and elective family, identity inheritances and emotional constructions, each has their own tribe and boundaries.
A prominent presence at this edition, Nan Goldin, winner of the Women In Motion award for photography, has placed her relationships with her friends and lovers at the center of her work. Friendship and sisterhood are also at the heart of Erica Lennard's work ("Women, Sisters"). Carmen Winant and Carol Newhouse engage in a visual conversation to "reinvent the lesbian and feminist 'self' in the 1970s in the United States…"
