55 years after its release, the magic of Grease still works. On Friday, June 27, American actor John Travolta caused a surprise appearance at the Hollywood Bowl theater in Los Angeles, where a karaoke screening of the cult film was taking place. The 71-year-old star took the stage wearing the leather jacket and iconic hairstyle of his character Danny Zuko, reports Entertainment Weekly . This unexpected appearance prompted loud cheers from the audience.

After greeting the other cast members and director Randal Kleiser, John Travolta turned to the cheering crowd: "LA? I thought you were going back to Australia," he said, echoing a classic line from the film. The artist then told his fans he was feeling "rock and roll and all that" and sang along to "A-womp-bop-a-looma a-womp-bam-boom?" from the song "We Go Together." "Enjoy the show, we love you!" John Travolta concluded, before leaving the stage. The next day, the Saturday Night Fever actor thanked the audience on Instagram: "Nobody knew. Not even the actors. Thanks for a great night," he commented.

Released in 1978, Grease tells the story of Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-Jon), an 18-year-old Australian high school student on vacation in the United States, who falls in love with Danny Zuko, a gang leader. A global success, the film grossed over $360 million worldwide. The soundtrack, meanwhile, became one of the best-selling in history, selling over 28 million copies.
