LIVE. Conflict between India and Pakistan: At least 34 dead in bombings, five Indian planes shot down

India and Pakistan bombarded each other on Wednesday, May 7, killing at least 26 people on the Pakistani side and eight others on the Indian side. The violence was of rare intensity between the two nuclear powers. Since gunmen killed 26 men in Indian-held Kashmir on April 22, tensions had been simmering between the two neighbors. But the diplomatic escalation turned military overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Hours after Indian strikes on Pakistani soil, the two armies exchanged artillery fire along their disputed border in Kashmir. Five Indian planes were shot down.
