An iconic symbol of the Croix-Rousse region, the Canuts fresco is in danger. Due to the wall's deteriorating condition, the City of Lyon has issued a safety order.

Created in 1987, the Canuts mural located on Boulevard des Canuts in Croix-Rousse is in danger. According to ActuLyon, a danger order has been issued by the City of Lyon due to the wall's degraded condition. A security system has been put in place around the mural to protect pedestrians from any potential falling elements from the wall.

The largest fresco in Europe, the Canuts fresco covers 1,200 square meters. Created by the Lyon artists of CitéCréation in 1987, it was renovated in 2013. It depicts the atmosphere and life of the Croix-Rousse district in an evolving manner, with elements added and characters aged over time.

Although the fresco is listed as a remarkable wall of communal interest, the wall on which it is inscribed is part of private property. This scheme will allow the owners to obtain funding from the City of Lyon for the restoration of the work.
