"A political choice": in Villeurbanne, the minimum salary for municipal employees now exceeds 1,600 euros net

Since February, the local authority has been paying all its Category C municipal employees a net salary of at least €1,632. The measure costs €1 million per year.

As many local authorities tighten their belts under financial pressure, the city of Villeurbanne (Rhône) has decided to increase the salaries of its municipal employees. Since the end of February, in France's 16th largest city, 1,420 employees out of a workforce of 2,500 have seen their salaries increase, reaching a net salary of €1,632 today, while the minimum wage is €1,426.

For the city, the measure is costly, but it was a campaign promise made by Socialist elected officials. "It's clearly a political choice," explains Olivier Glück, the city's deputy for human resources and social dialogue. "Since the beginning of the mandate, we've also created almost 300 jobs ," the elected official continues.
