Bank branches: an endangered species

3,296 bank branches closed between 2020 and 2025. This is a massacre linked in particular to the change in practices: many French people manage their accounts online.
In Montreuil-l'Argillé, in the Eure department, the village's only bank branch is in its final stages. It will soon be transferred to the neighboring village, as it is not receiving enough traffic. Shopkeepers and other residents are worried. At the bakery, the preferred payment method is often coins and bills. But the Eure village is far from being an isolated case.
In the Eure department, 17 bank branches have closed in five years. This phenomenon is also affecting major cities. In five years, there have been 13 fewer branches in Quimper (Finistère), 28 fewer in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), and 28 fewer branches in Lille (Nord). France still remains one of the European countries with the most branches: 36,000.
