In 2025, France's debt will reach a record figure of 3,345.8 billion euros. A deficit that is costly and continues to grow.

France's debt has grown significantly since the beginning of the year. In 2000, public debt stood at €855 billion. It will now reach a record €3,345.8 billion in 2025. While this debt certainly increased during the financial crisis in 2009 and the Covid crisis in 2020, it has increased even outside of exceptional periods: €40 billion more since the beginning of the year.

The result: the country's debt has reached 114% of GDP, more than what France produces in a year. "But we are not the European champions," notes journalist Jean-Paul Chapel. Greece occupies first place on the podium with 154% of its GDP, and second place goes to Italy with 135% of its GDP. And the debt is getting more and more expensive: just to pay the interest on the loan, France spent €60 billion last year. This corresponds to the "debt burden."
