Puy-de-Dôme: closure of an Auchan store in Clermont-Ferrand, when a place of life disappears

Puy-de-Dôme: closure of an Auchan store in Clermont-Ferrand, when a place of life disappears

Reading time: 1 min - video: 2 min

When a hypermarket located in a neighborhood is about to close, it's a shock for an entire population. This is the case, for example, in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme).

Last moments of life in a hypermarket condemned to closure. Alongside the completely empty shelves, there are still a few products to sell and customers who are coming for the last time. "How are we going to do our shopping? Where?" asks a customer. Nearly 200 employees will be laid off. The final mobilization took place on Saturday, May 17, with great emotion. The closure is difficult to take for the working-class neighborhood in the north of Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme).

The brand has enjoyed success there. Mammouth emerged in 1972, with an 8,000m² store, before being acquired by Auchan in 1997. The red and green bird then became a true living space. Today, the closure of the neighborhood's only hypermarket is worrying residents. The Auchan group cites excessive costs and a loss of competitiveness. The brand's market share has shrunk: from 12.1% in 2012 to 8% in 2024. The retailer finds itself in fifth place behind its competitors. As a result, there is a major social plan. 2,400 jobs are being cut and four supermarkets are being closed across France.
