Another setback for Shein. One month after the Senate passed a bill aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of textiles and banning advertising on social media in France, government agencies fined the Chinese-based site €40 million for fraud on Thursday, July 3.
After an investigation lasting several years – the inquiry was opened at the end of 2022 – the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) revealed in particular “the implementation” , by the company Infinite Style E-commerce LTD (ISEL), responsible for sales of Shein products, of “deceptive commercial practices towards consumers regarding the reality of the price reductions granted” .
The fine, a record for this type of offense, was "proposed" with "the agreement of the Paris public prosecutor" and "following a transaction procedure," the DGCCRF stated in its press release, adding that Shein accepted the sanction.
