Swisscom's turnover explodes, Wingo angers its customers
The blue-chip giant recorded historic results at the start of 2025. At the same time, its subsidiary Wingo announced a controversial price increase.
Swisscom has just recorded its best quarterly revenue in history. Revenue jumped more than 39% to reach 3.759 billion francs, the blue giant announced on Thursday. This real boom can be explained by the "fruitful" acquisition of Vodafone Italia at the end of 2024, Swisscom acknowledged. This acquisition also allowed the group to "well exceed" 30 million mobile and broadband connections in Switzerland and Italy.
However, not all results were rosy. In the Swiss segment, for example, revenue fell by 1.2% to CHF 1.962 billion. "However, this decline was offset by almost half through cost savings," the company reassured. Net profit, meanwhile, fell by CHF 88 million (-19.3%) compared to the previous year, reaching CHF 367 million. This decline was notably explained by "the increase in expenses related to the acquisition of Vodafone Italia."
Wingo, a subsidiary of Swisscom, will likely contribute to replenishing the parent company's coffers, much to the dismay of subscribers. As Salt and Sunrise have already done recently, the low-cost operator announced last week a general increase of one franc on all its subscriptions starting in July. The problem: it had repeatedly promoted subscriptions by promising "lifetime" prices.
In the face of the outcry, however, Wingo has backtracked, as reported by "SRF" on Wednesday. Customers who signed a "lifetime" contract can ultimately decide to stay at the current rate, as long as they opt out of being connected to Swisscom's 5G network, the stated reason for the price increase.
