Taxes: Anyone with a swimming pool should check this box, it can still be changed

Taxes: Anyone with a swimming pool should check this box, it can still be changed

If the tax return is closed, this detail can still be changed with the tax authorities.

Summer is back, along with the heat, and of course, the desire for a pool is becoming more and more pressing. Those who have one haven't waited until mid-June to clean and turn it on. The first dives have long since been made, and the weekends spent floating are starting to pile up.

However, before enjoying the pool, maintenance costs must be incurred. Few owners think about it, but a portion of it is 50% tax deductible. Certain expenses can reduce your taxable income and, therefore, lower the amount of tax payable. But you just need to know the trick.

Just like the tax deductions for gardening services, hiring a pool professional for certain maintenance services can help you reduce your taxes. However, this is strictly regulated, as only two specific services are 50% tax deductible: cleaning the pool edges and surroundings, as well as cleaning equipment, such as the shutter, cover, and/or protective barrier, or the technical room. And that's it!

The scope is limited, but for people who can no longer maintain their pool themselves, it's always good to know that part of the cost is tax deductible. To do this, you must indicate the amount spent in box 7DB, i.e., the line "amounts paid in 2024" in the "Personal services: home employment" section.

If you've already filled it out due to gardening or cleaning work, the amount is added to the amounts already indicated. Be careful not to be too greedy, however. The tax authorities deduct a maximum of €2,500 from taxable income through this method, no more. That's 50% of €5,000 in expenses. Anything beyond that cannot be deducted.

If the tax return deadline has passed, it is still possible to amend it until the end of July. Those who own a swimming pool and forgot to deduct these expenses incurred in 2024 from their income can still add them in the corresponding box.

Be careful though: since this is a change to your tax return after the deadline and which, moreover, is in your favor since it allows you to reduce the amount of taxes to pay, it is imperative to keep the supporting documents, or even send them directly to the tax authorities to explain your approach. Showing your credentials generally avoids disputes because if the taxpayer does not justify, of his own accord, his change to the Public Treasury, then an audit should take place. Better to avoid this small administrative inconvenience...
