Taxes: Only a few hours left for all these French people, here are the deadlines for filing their tax return

Deadlines for filing your tax return are getting shorter and shorter. Beware the deadline!

The final stretch for filing your tax return is upon us. Many French people have only a few days, or even hours, left to complete their tax forms online. The deadline is fast approaching in all departments, and failure to comply with this tax obligation could result in a fine.

For some, it's even outdated, as the 5 million taxpayers who file their tax returns on paper, as well as those living abroad, only had until May 20 to do so. For the rest, it's time to keep an eye on the calendar again to avoid being among the latecomers.

Starting with all residents of departments numbered 1 to 19. For them, the deadline is set for this Thursday, May 22nd at 11:59 p.m. They have until this very precise time to complete their declaration on the tax website. For those residing in departments 20 to 54, an additional period is granted since the deadline is set for Wednesday, May 28th, at 11:59 p.m. Finally, for all those who live in a department numbered 55 or higher, including overseas territories, the deadline is a little less tight since the declaration service will not close until Thursday, June 5th at 11:59 p.m.

According to figures released by the Directorate General of Public Finances to Le Parisien , however, few taxpayers wait until the last minute. 15% wait until the last week to validate their declaration and only 2.5% of taxpayers declare their income on the last day, or around 200,000 people for zone 1.

It's best not to miss deadlines, as the tax authorities impose heavy penalties on late filers. Taxes are increased by 10% for any late filing, and this can rise to 20% or even 40% if the DGFiP (French Directorate General for Taxation and Public Finance) sent you a formal notice and you ignored it. Even those who don't pay taxes must adhere to the deadline: a fine of €150 can be imposed on those who fail to file their tax return, even if they have nothing to pay.
