Thailand, Balearic Islands, Amazon, PSG: the night's news

Thailand is closing most traffic with Cambodia. The restrictions, announced Monday as Bangkok and Phnom Penh renewed their border disputes following the death of a Khmer soldier in late May, apply to both Thais and tourists, meaning the busy Aranyaprathet Poipet crossing can no longer be used. Border posts in Surin, Buriram, Sri Sa Ket, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces are closed with immediate effect except for essential travel. “The military only allows border crossings for humanitarian reasons, including the movement of urgent patients and students, as well as for activities necessary for daily living ,” the Bangkok Post reported . The day before, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered a halt to fuel and gas imports from Thailand.
Bodies of migrants found tied up off the coast of the Balearic Islands. An investigation into suspected homicide has been opened to identify the victims and determine the circumstances of their deaths, the Spanish Civil Guard announced on Monday. According to El Diario de Mallorca , at least five bodies have been recovered since mid-May by Civil Guard boats. According to investigators quoted by the regional daily, these migrants may have been tied up and then thrown into the sea during their crossing to Spain, perhaps after a dispute with their smugglers. But for the newspaper, the investigation could prove very difficult “because passengers on boats in an irregular situation” often hesitate to “report the abuse suffered during crossings from the Algerian coast” due to their immigration status.
Amazon is investing heavily in the United Kingdom. The online retail giant will dedicate 40 billion pounds (46 billion euros) to the British market, a titanic commitment presented as a strong signal by Keir Starmer's government, which is facing economic difficulties. The Prime Minister said it was "a vote of confidence" in his country. The 40 billion pounds will be used to build four distribution centers in Hull, Northampton, and the East Midlands. Part of the sum will also finance the rehabilitation of the historic Bray film studios, acquired in July 2024, to shoot films and series. "Amazon has not always had an easy time" in the United Kingdom, the Times points out, however . The company has "received criticism over its safety record in its distribution centers" and "has also clashed with the GMB union over pay and working conditions," the British daily points out.
Club World Cup: Paris Saint-Germain beat Seattle and advance to the round of 16. The Parisian club won Monday at home against the Seattle Sounders (2-0). The French and European champions opened the scoring thanks to a lucky goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who deflected a Vitinha shot with his back (35th) before Achraf Hakimi scored the second goal shortly after the hour mark (66th). PSG, who finished first in Group B ahead of Botafogo, beaten by Atlético Madrid, (1-0), will face the second-placed team in Group A in the round of 16 in Atlanta on Sunday. “The main question [on Monday] was whether” Paris Saint-Germain “would be able to bounce back from their defeat against Botafogo ,” notes BBC Sport . The answer was “yes,” underlines the British media. The French team was far from being at its best but it performed well enough to beat its hosts.”
