The 2026 budget, Bayrou's version: work more to earn less

Analysis The Prime Minister has unveiled his guidelines for the 2026 budget and, to the surprise of the leader, he is hoping for a social big bang.

Forward "production" ! This was one of François Bayrou's watchwords on Tuesday, July 15, during his "moment of truth" conference aimed at detailing the budgetary guidelines for 2026. And, beyond the 43.8 billion euros in savings, the Prime Minister was keen to follow the Macronian line of boosting French growth (or at least hoping to boost it) by supporting activity.
"We must work more, the whole nation must work more to produce and […] so that the situation in France improves," the head of government intoned.
Concretely: everyone to work! But without compensation. A sort of adaptation of the now-established formula, "work more to earn less."
Why save dividends?The first shock, far from being merely symbolic, is the elimination of two public holidays...
