Thirteen suicides in the tax administration since January: a meeting organized this Wednesday

Thirteen tax administration officials have committed suicide since January and eight others have attempted to do so, two union sources reported on Tuesday, a figure confirmed by the Directorate General of Public Finances (DGFiP), which is holding a meeting on the subject this Wednesday, July 9. "This is a situation that we are monitoring, which I do not believe is linked to organizational, workload, or management reasons," said Economy Minister Eric Lombard on Tuesday, when questioned on the subject before the Finance Committee of the National Assembly.

Reporting

At the same time as confirming the number of thirteen suicides since January, the DGFiP specified that the meeting organized on the subject following the revelation of the figures would be held at 2:30 p.m. It will bring together four trade union organizations, while a communication will be distributed following the exchange, without the establishment specifying the date.

According to Sandra Demarcq, secretary general of Solidaires Finances Publiques, the leading trade union in the tax administration, and Olivier Villois, secretary general of CGT Finances Publiques, the second largest representative trade union, two suicides and two attempted suicides took place in the workplace. They specified that the thirteen deaths had been recorded across the country. Sandra Demarcq said she was "angry and determined" before Wednesday's meeting, regretting "a minimization" of the facts by the administration, according to her. "Expectations are enormous" before Wednesday's meeting, which has been called for several months, stressed Olivier Villois, who expressed his concern about a "downward spiral."

In April, the DGFiP confirmed that five employees had taken their own lives since January, including one at work on January 10, 2025, and reported two suicide attempts at work. "These tragedies require our utmost attention, regardless of the circumstances," and "this is a high level over such a short period," read an internal document dated April 8, 2025, signed by Amélie Verdier, the Director General of Public Finances, an administration that has 95,000 employees in 2025.
