To strengthen its energy independence, the EU extends the gas storage agreement

The European Parliament and the Council – representing the 27 member states – agreed on Tuesday, June 24, to extend a regulation requiring EU member states to reach 90% of their gas reserves before winter. It aims to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on Moscow .
The obligation has been extended for two years, until the end of 2027, the Polish Presidency of the EU Council announced in a statement. This regulation was adopted in June 2022 after the drastic reduction in Russian supplies following the invasion of Ukraine. It aims to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on Moscow.
The agreement sets "a 90% occupancy target" and "introduces additional flexibilities allowing Member States to adapt to market developments," according to the statement. In particular, it allows this occupancy rate to be achieved "at any time between October 1 and December 1, instead of the current deadline of November 1."
Gas storage infrastructure covers around 30% of the European Union's gas consumption during the winter months, according to the Commission. "By ensuring sufficient storage before winter, we protect our citizens and businesses from price shocks and supply disruptions," said Polish Industry Minister Marzena Czarnecka.
