Train crash in Tonneins: earthworks pending the vehicle being split in two

Train crash in Tonneins: earthworks pending the vehicle being split in two

By Etienne Estarellas

Since yesterday, workers have been working to stabilize the track to free the train. It will be transported in two parts by locomotives, one to Toulouse, the other to Bordeaux. A track rehabilitation project will follow.

Less than 24 hours after the train accident in Tonneins, the SNCF began earthworks on Tuesday, May 20. On the morning of Wednesday, May 21, workers placed beams under the track to stabilize the rail. This was necessary to stabilize the vehicle and prevent "everything from collapsing," the railway company announced.

Meanwhile, an expert assessment is underway to assess the area and free the train. SNCF explains that the vehicle will be split in two, at the level of the car that has slightly detached from the rail, without knowing exactly when this operation will take place.

Locomotives will be coming to pull each section: the head of the train toward Toulouse; the other section toward Bordeaux. On site, it is said that this could take place during the day. The schedule for the following work is currently being developed. Once the train is cleared, expert assessments must first continue before the track rehabilitation project begins. SNCF will release information on its duration on Thursday, May 22. The date for the resumption of service remains unknown.
