Lyon: Eleven HCL patients in stand-up at the Croix-Rousse theater

On Friday, June 20, eleven women with cancer shared their stories in stand-up on the stage of the Croix-Rousse theater.
On Friday, June 20, several patients from the oncology department of the HCL (Hospices Civils de Lyon) took to the stage of the Croix-Rousse Theater to present their stand-up comedy. In front of a hundred people, the eleven women shared intimate and poignant stories with a touch of humor for nearly two hours.
"We went to meet art, but above all ourselves. We recreate ourselves. We are reborn. Through words, through writing, through humor. Each workshop, each word spoken, each laugh shared, is a victory. Yes, I have cancer over my head. And yet, I am here. Alive," shares Lily, one of the eleven cancer patients.
Launched in conjunction with Mohamed El Khatib's play "Stand-up" performed in parallel at the Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse, this show represents the fruit of three months of work alongside professional artists.
As HCL points out: "This story will not be without a future." While a podcast recorded throughout rehearsals will keep track of the project, new initiatives of this type are expected to emerge soon.
One of them will serve as a test to evaluate the benefits generated by such activities in a hospital setting: "We see what this brings to patients, some are still ill, have a difficult prognosis, and yet, they find in these projects the possibility of becoming actors in their journey again, of no longer suffering, of giving meaning to what they are going through, outside of the strictly medical framework", explains the deputy head of gynecological surgery at the Croix-Rousse hospital.
To measure these benefits, the HCL will conduct a study in collaboration with Sarah Carvalho, professor of philosophy at the University of Lyon 1: "We will launch a research project to document these effects, both on patients and on healthcare teams. Because if we want these initiatives to become widespread, we need data and evidence ," explains the head of department.
