Sunscreens, sunglasses... What protection should you choose for children?

Sunscreens, sunglasses... What protection should you choose for children?

In spray, in a tube, white or colored... Faced with the multitude of sunscreens available for children, it's difficult to find your way around. However, not all are equal and it's important to choose a product suitable for the youngest. "For children and babies, it's essential to choose a mineral sunscreen, and it's best to buy it from a pharmacy," explains Dr. Danièle Bloch, pediatrician, in an interview with "Parents" magazine. Composed of zinc dioxide and titanium dioxide, mineral screens form a film that will reflect UV rays.

The Sun Protection Factor, which must be listed, indicates the cream's level of protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. For infants and children, it's recommended to choose a product with at least SPF 50+. Also pay attention to UVA protection, which is also indicated on the packaging.

One application after each swim

Finally, according to Dr. Bloch, creams are preferable, as they are more water-resistant, rather than mists, which are lighter: "When you apply the cream to the child's body and face, it should leave white marks." Note that application should take place 20 minutes before sun exposure and should be renewed at least every two hours, and after each swim, even if it is water-resistant.

Please note that sun exposure is not recommended for children under 3 years old. Between 2 and 3 years old, opt for UV protective clothing, and before 2 years old, avoid putting your baby directly in the sun: a parasol and an anti-UV tent will then be your best allies. Don't forget, at any age, a hat and sunglasses.

These are, in fact, another essential element of protection for the little ones, whose eyes are particularly fragile. Here too, there is plenty to choose from, but certain criteria should not be overlooked.

So, before choosing a pair of glasses, first check that the European CE standard is clearly marked on the temples. This symbol is a guarantee of compliance with manufacturing and performance regulations.

For sunglasses, too, the protection factor is important. For children, it should be at least 3, or even 4 for exposure at the beach.
