The 10 Most Comfortable Couches You Can Buy

The 10 Most Comfortable Couches You Can Buy

Best Overall Comfortable Sofa

Movie Night 5-Piece Modular Sectional
Pros
  • Supersoft cushions
  • Wide seating conducive to great lounging
Cons
  • Back low for some
  • Pretty pricey

Naming your sofa the Movie Night Sectional is a bold choice, because you’re promising a couch that is so comfy and inviting you might accidentally watch the entire second season of Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal in one go. I was so intrigued that I went to Sundays’ new store in New York City to put the sofa to the test to see if it’s worthy of its name. I’ve tested at least a hundred sofas at this point, and this one was by far the most comfortable. The cushions hit the hard-to-calibrate balance between supportive and soft.

I don’t think I could ever own it, though, because I would never get anything done. It’s a sofa made for lazy days and many naps. I sat on the large 5-piece sectional, which I definitely recommend if you have a big enough space. This sofa is also designed with the modern shopper in mind — it’s modular, making it easy to move or reposition, and covered in Sundays’ signature non-toxic, stain-resistant, and washable fabric, which makes it perfect for families with kids and pets.

Most Comfortable Leather Sofa

Mambo Sofa
Pros
  • Choose from high or low arms
  • Modular, buildable design
Cons
  • Back might be low for some
  • Pricey

Sometimes Burrow sofas can look a bit entry-level, which makes sense, because Burrow makes great, high-quality furniture for those who aren’t looking to spend three months’ rent on a couch. Burrow’s Mambo sofa is one of my all-time favorites that I’ve tried. It looks way more expensive than it is, and if you like a firmer couch, then this is an option that you should definitely check out. Plus, the camel-colored leather is buttery soft.

Burrow specializes in modular sofas, so the Mambo is easy to re-arrange. There’s an added bonus with this DTC retailer, though—you can always buy more modules and make your sofa even bigger if you find that you’ve won the lottery and can finally buy a house. The only downside is that you will put the pile of boxes on your front stoop together, but it won’t be a IKEA-level project.

Most Customizable Comfortable Sofa

Sink Down Sectional
Pros
  • 7 configurations
  • Wide, comfy construction
Cons
  • Some find stitching puckered after some use
  • 7-9 weeks of ship time

If you’re going to drop a lot of money on a sofa, you might as well ensure that you get exactly what you want. You would think in 2025 that retailers would offer a bunch of different configuration options for each of their sofas, but this is still pretty rare. Floyd is one of the few Internet sofa companies that provides it.

For Floyd’s fan-favorite Sink Down sofa, they offer seven configurations—the largest being a 4-piece corner sectional and the smallest being a lounger chair with an ottoman—so you can adapt the sofa to the size of your space. This cozy sofa is a great choice if you want a colorful couch. There are 14 colors, including a handful of two-tone options where there’s a lighter shade on the sofa cushions and a darker color along the base and frame of the sofa. Plus, if you’re a big spiller, Floyd’s got you covered with a Crypton performance fabric that forces the water to bead up rather than sink in, so you have enough time to lunge for some paper towels.

Best Small-Space Comfortable Sofa

Kova Box Cushion Sofa
Pros
  • A ton of fabric options
  • Anti-slip cushions
Cons
  • Need to fluff pillow cushions often

If you have a space that requires a compact sofa, you know how tough it is to find one that’s stylish, well-made, and actually nice to lounge on. Thankfully, direct-to-consumer sofa brand Albany Park checks all of those boxes. The two-seater Kova Sofa is one that I always recommend to my fellow apartment dwellers—because clocking in at under $2,000, it’s a great deal.

Albany Park’s box cushions are hypoallergenic, fluffy, and non-slip, so you won’t have to grumpily adjust your cushions halfway through a lazy day at home. Albany provides plenty of performance fabric options, ranging from colorful velvet to tasteful neutrals.

Best Comfortable Designer Sofa

Mario Bellini Sofa
Pros
  • Highly designed sofa
  • Expert construction
Cons
  • Very expensive
  • Only one color in stock

You might be thinking: Hey, this sofa looks really familiar! You’ve likely seen it on your Instagram feed in house tours or in that really cool friend’s apartment—and now it could be in yours, too. I don’t recommend buying something just because it looks like it could be in the MoMA (designer Mario Bellini has shown work in MoMA). Furniture should be functional—and this bubbly sofa fulfills both briefs. It’s nappable and oh so stylish. That said, with the rounded back cushions, it’s not well suited to a WFH sofa.

But if you want some designer furniture, be prepared for the price tag and… for some longer ship times if the color you want isn’t in stock. But good things come to those who wait, right?

Most Comfortable Sleeper Sofa

Urban 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional w/ Storage Chaise
Pros
  • Pulls out to a full-size mattress
  • Has hidden storage
Cons
  • Looks a little basic

I like sofas with some extra bells and whistles, because, after all, they take up so much space in your living room. This West Elm sofa exceeded even my high expectations by transforming into a full-size mattress and offering storage in the ottoman. West Elm is one of the huge large furniture retailers out there that makes long-lasting and thoughtfully designed sofas.

You’re able to pick from 57 different fabric and color options, which is one of the benefits of going with a big store over a smaller DTC site. The Urban 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional is a classic, no-frills sofa, in terms of design. When I tested it in the store, I found it to have a supportive seat, and it’s not as deep as some of the other options on this list, which is a positive in my book. And if you get sick of lying on the sofa, you can always turn it into a bed.

Best Classic Comfortable Sofa

Comfort Roll Arm Sofa
Pros
  • Multiple sizes for different spaces
  • Customizable cushion options
Cons
  • Cushions can fade if the sofa is placed in direct sunlight

You might associate Pottery Barn with your parents’ generation, but hey, they make really comfy couches. Don’t sleep on Pottery Barn — I currently have a 20-year-old+ Pottery Barn loveseat in my one-bedroom, and it’s holding up just fine. And if you’re really unsure about a model, you can go and check it out at one of the brand’s brick-and-mortar stores for peace of mind.

I chose this particular sofa, which I’ve tested in the store, because it’s like the Goldilocks of sofas. The seat height, softness, and support are all solid mediums, but the couch is deep. It’s a sofa that you can both sit and lie on—It’s comfy without feeling like a cushy sinkhole that’ll be impossible to get out of when you have chores to do.

Most Uniquely Designed Comfortable Sofa

Marlow Performance Bouclé Curve Sofa
Pros
  • Cool curve silhouette
  • Fabric is durable enough to withstand kids and pets
Cons
  • Only two fabric options
  • Sofa back might be too low for some

Castlery is one of those direct-to-consumer brands that’s actually worth the hype. The brand specializes in making unique, modern-feeling furniture at a halfway decent price and it ships within a few weeks. What more can you ask for?

Castlery’s Marlow Curve Sofa looks like it should be a lot more expensive than it is. It looks like it’s designer but it’s covered in a performance bouclé fabric, making it resistant to spills and scratches. This sofa might look a little too sculptural to be comfortable, but cushions are plush and soft and the seat is deep, meaning that you got the best of both worlds. Prepare to get a ton of compliments.

Best Comfortable Minimalist Sofa

Sunday 102" Sofa
Pros
  • Sleek silhouette
  • Foam-wrapped cushions will take on a more casual look after use
Cons
  • Sofa back might be too low for some

Another aptly named comfy sofa, Sundays is meant for the weekend days or weeknights where you feel like sofa-rotting. It’s one of those sofas that even looks inviting, thanks to its barely-there sofa legs and cloud-like silhouette. The cushions are made out of foam and wrapped in feather and down, ensuring that they won’t end up being pancakes on your couch after a year of use. The camel velvet is my favorite fabric option.

BluDot, based in Minneapolis, is known for making tastefully minimal furniture, and this sofa is no exception. And if you want to see it in person, the retailer opened its brick-and-mortar flagship in New York City last year.

Best Comfortable Leather Sofa

Sven 88" Tufted Leather Sofa
Pros
  • Mid-century modern tufted design
  • Many color and fabric options
Cons
  • On the firmer side

Article is one of the best direct-to-consumer brands out there, in my opinion. If you want a budget-friendly comfortable couch, then you can find one on this Canada-based furniture brand’s website. The Sven Tufted Sofa is one of Article’s top-selling sofas. It’s got an elevated mid-century modern design—just peep the arm roll cushion and tufting—and it’s made for lounging.

Reviewers say it’s a bit of a firmer couch, but the vast majority find it to be a cozy couch. Article isn’t one of those companies that’s obsessed with beige, thankfully. There are plenty of beautifully colored fabrics to choose from, so this couch can be the focal point in your living room.

To some extent, a couch’s comfortability is subjective. That said, I look at seat depth, how firm the cushions are, how the couch is described by the furniture company, and what the cushions are made out of. Couches that have a higher seat depth and soft or medium cushions are usually comfortable. Sofas with cushions are made of a mix of foam, down, and/or down alternatives are typically the perfect balance of supportive and comfy, because no one wants paper-thin cushions on a couch. And a sofa brand does know their products well, they’re not going to try to pass a firm couch off as something you’d take a nap on — otherwise, they’d have to deal with a ton of returns. I’ve personally recommended couches that I’ve seen and tested in-person.

We know sofas and how divisive they can be — everyone has their own opinion about what a comfortable sofa is, so we tried to provide comfortable options for every price point and preference.
