Already 3,000 books: the new library in Le Lavandou awaits its readers

"It's a new page in the history of Le Lavandou that is being written this evening ," smiled Gil Bernardi a few minutes before cutting the essential tricolor ribbon that still bars the door of the municipal library. The features of each and every one remain drawn by the ordeal that the City experienced during the terrible floods of Cavalière, but the news becomes happy again in the commune with the realization of a 2020 campaign promise.

Until now, readers have been heading to the premises on Avenue du Général Bouvet to stock up on the collection of books run by the Bibliothèque pour tous association.

Since this Saturday, they can head towards Villa "Descude", at the corner of Rue de la Rigourette and Avenue des Commandos d'Afrique.

Purchased by the municipality in 2021, it was completely renovated and transformed into a municipal library. A new service managed by the town hall, which invested some €350,000 in the project (and now plans to invest in the building's upper floor).

Over an area of around one hundred square metres, 3,000 volumes (partly loaned by the departmental media library) have taken their place on the shelves and are ready to be devoured.

" In this project, we wanted to place the child at the heart of the library," emphasizes Gil Bernardi, explaining that we wanted to "promote access to reading from a very young age, transmit a love of books and the French language to offer young people an environment conducive to daydreaming and imagination. In this all-digital age, the library must be a refuge where the smell of paper exudes. (...) This project carries great ambitions for the future of our village."

The municipal premises vacated on Avenue du Général Bouvet must now be dedicated to welcoming young people from the Teen Club and the youth center.

Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration is free for residents of Lavandou with proof of address and ID.
